VFD DALSTON - VFD10 ‘PUNISH THE STREETS
An Exhibition celebrating a decade of vFd Dalston and highlighting the amazing influences that flow between club culture, art and fashion, ‘Punish the streets ran during January - March 2019 at New Arts Projects London where Avril acted as one of the intimate curation team alongside Nathalie Khan, Lyall Hakaraia, Rhiannon Edwards, Bea Redweik and New Art Projects owner Fred Mann ( Further Technical Assistance provided by Gallery Manager Tim Hutchinson)
The title “Punish the Streets’ referred to transgressive bodies and cultures challenging norms. It describes a process that vFd; a live music venue, dance & night club, performance and art theatre - has in one way or another, inspired, nurtured and cultivated in the last ten years. vFd (Formerly known as Vogue Fabrics) is a collective, a plot, a movement, a subject and a culture - an originator and incubator of queer arts and entertainment in Dalston.
The exhibition brought together a number of people who have long been at the centre of vFd’s history, some who have passed through and others who continue to shape it, in recognition of Club Culture creating it’s own necessities - a free and perpetually drifting space, which is constantly changing. The participating artists created new work for #VFD10 to form an exciting and compelling exhibition, including painting, drawing and installation. Also a celebration of vFd’s notorious and glorious times ‘Punish the Streets’ also featured film footage, music videos and original artwork from the club’s extensive archive; piecing together the way Designers, Artists, DJ’s, Poets and Performers have imagined vFd’s possibilities in past and present.
